2017 has been an eventful and enjoyable year so far, and I decided to make it even more exciting by signing up for the Sleeping Bear Dunes Marathon this fall in Empire, Michigan!
Ok, marathons may not be the first thing that come to mind when you visualize an “exciting” activity, but crossing the finish line after a grueling 26.2 miles is a joy like no other! Others who have completed marathons (or half marathons too) would likely agree. This will be my 5th marathon, but I am especially excited for this one for the scenic views up in northern Michigan in the fall. Plus, my mother-in-law Cathy is going to run the half! This lady can RUN and constantly inspires me with her talents and motivation!
To jog my memory (ha!), I wanted to share some highlights and photos from my past marathons. These races resulted in some incredibly happy memories:
Des Moines Marathon 2013
I ran my first marathon in my home state of Iowa. My goal was to run a sub-4 hour race, and I achieved this goal with a 3:54:27! My first marathon left me with a burning desire to do more!
Chicago Marathon 2014
I ran this marathon on October 12, 2014, and it was without question one of the best days of my life. Not only did I run my marathon PR (personal record), I also ran a Boston qualifying time (3:32:36 or 8:07 mile average)! The race conditions that day were absolutely perfect, and I had the support of my (now) husband and parents cheering me on, which meant more than they will ever know. I still look back with pride--and disbelief--at how speedy I was in this race!
Chicagoland Spring Marathon 2015
This marathon course ran throughout Busse Woods in Schaumburg, Illinois. This is a familiar trail where I complete much of my training. It was a warm and humid run, but I still managed to run a 3:45:42! I want to give a shout out to my friend Lori who ran the half that day. She is one of my favorite runners!
Des Moines Marathon 2015
This marathon brought me to the realization that the Des Moines Marathon was hillier than I remembered! I finished in 3:52:06, so a slight improvement from my previous marathon in Des Moines. This marathon was my friend Kaitlin’s first! She is like my sister and it was a great day for all!
Truly, I am looking forward to the challenge over the months to come! Any encouragement and positive vibes are always welcome. If you are on the fence of signing up for a race, DO IT!
With that, I’ll close with one of my favorite quotes:
