Door County Half Marathon
“This isn’t about going back. This is about life being ahead of you and you run at it. Because you never know how far you can go until you run”
– From Disney’s Secretariat
This quote really hits the mark going into a racing weekend and I dug up an old photo of my horse Dolly running wild. The beautiful and powerful horses in the Kentucky Derby aren’t the only ones going to be running on Saturday! I am looking forward to my 12th half marathon this weekend alongside two of my favorite coworkers (Lori and Donna), as well as my hubby Rob. We are all running the Door County Half Marathon in Wisconsin, with stunning views in Peninsula State Park. The elevation map shows we are in for a real challenge with some hills, especially between miles 4-9, but bring them on!
I think most runners would agree that pre-race jitters are always present. It doesn’t matter if you’re running your first 5k or 20th marathon, every race sparks the stomach butterflies. Though the feeling can be uncomfortable, I find this anxious feeling quite beneficial when it comes to race time. I don’t know how to explain the true physiological response that is happening, but the nervous feelings often translate to faster running thanks to a nice boost of adrenaline!
As I mentally prepare for Saturday, I am focusing on the positives. This week has been rather interesting and challenging, including high temperatures, high humidity, and rain. Fortunately, the training season has been going well for me overall, so I am hoping this week was just an outlier. Regardless of my finishing time, I will be in a beautiful place with some really incredible people. Last but not least, I will be giving it my all. My ultimate goal is to enjoy the race, even the pain. Some of life’s best moments are those when you are outside of your comfort zone!
To those also running races (or completing a long training run) this weekend, good luck! Donna, Lori, and Rob—we are going to be great! To everyone else, have a lovely weekend as well. With Cinco de Mayo and the Derby, there is so much to be excited about!
The gallery below shows some of the running conditions so far this year! I loved it all!
